Synopsis: Brit, her wife Marisol, and her mother Eileen survive the Zombie apocalypse as members of a group of women. Brit is about giving birth which makes the Zombies restless: they smell blood and a newborn will cause a rampage. That’s why Brit and Marisol have to leave the enclave and go to a safe haven in form of a shipping container.
They lock inside, but outside the zombies are already waiting. Will they go away?
Review: The short story here has been nominated for this year’s Nebula Award season (check out the list with references to online available stories and my reviews).
It is full of tension, a short, enjoyable read, raising questions like “Is it selfish to have a baby in these final days?”
The story is narrated straight forward, targeting for the punch. An ugly last minute deus-ex-machina shook me out of this world and cost the story one star.
The story is good enough for a short read, but it won’t last. People have enjoyed it, though, as it was in Uncanny’s top five favorite fiction readers’ poll, loosing only to Martha Wells’s Salt Witch. Your mileage might vary, so check it out!
