Small Bird’s Plea • 2020 • YA Science Fantasy short story by Todd McCaffrey

★★+☆☆☆

Synopsis: Small Bird is a young girl on her way to a magical cave to plea for her demon ridden village. Nobody from her village helps her, because she’s the only one who can see the demons. She‘s quite exhausted when she meets a talking lion and elephant. They help her on the way and introduce themselves as avatars of protecting military. As she arrives in the cavern, a demon is already there.

Review: The author is Anne McCaffrey‘s son who extended her Dragons of Pern series by several volumes. His other works are far less known and found only a handful of reviews on Goodreads.
This is the first piece I‘ve read from him and didn’t like it that much. Partly because of the juvenile touch with all the cuteness. Partly because I didn’t believe that a little girl would be allowed to travel on her own. And partly because I didn’t like the story‘s predictable ending at all. It was all too sugary for my taste.

Meta: isfdb. Published in the anthology The Book of Dragons.

Not promising. Have you read his Pern novels? Are they any good?
