All the Flavors • 2012 • Silkpunk novella by Ken Liu

★★★

Synopsis A group of Chinese gold miners arrives in Idaho City after the Civil War. The landlord’s daughter gets to like them (though not the cooked dog), their songs and stories about Guan Yu, the Chinese God of War, which is woven into the frame story.

Review A charming and comfortable story about the 19th century Chinese immigration, their integration, tolerance, and the possible flavors of food. One of those being Whiskey, the taste of America. It is more a historical fiction with faery tale than a speculative fiction. For my taste, the story was too black and white.

Meta: isfdb. This novella was published Giganotosaurus, February 1, 2012. I read it as part of The Paper Menagerie. It is also available for free.
