God Decay • 2014 • near SF short story by Rich Larson

Ostap is a cyborg, cleaning world records and gold medals of 2028. He was created as an experiment, and his female doctor crossed professional lines with him. Eight years later, they meet again, as his body starts failing. His medical situation will shortly be desastrous, both face a media storm. How will they master the crisis.

A superman faces harsh consequences of this kind of doping. It is more a relation of Frankenstein and his Monster, but the monster is revulsed by the aging of his former lover. I liked the emotional complexity of the internal and external relationships of that pair but I didn’t like the flat ending.

Similar topic like Slipping but I found Beukes’s story better.

Meta: ISFDB. First published 2014 in Upgraded. I’ve read it in The Years Best SF #32.
