Beside the Damned River • 2014 • SF shortstory by D. J. Cockburn

★★★★

A Thai community got deserted when China built a dam upstream of the Mekong river. Narong is an old man, once an engineering professor before they closed the Thai university. Some day, an European woman Angelica and her Thai driver strand in the community because their truck broke down. They transport something very valuable from outer space. Narong helps them, and an interesting triangle relationship develops with a little bit of sexual tension between Narong and Angelica, and a rooster fight between the two males.

The SFional background is interesting, and I’d like to read a novel in this setting. I liked the nicely drawn characters and the exotic setting.

Meta: ISFDB. I’ve read it in The Years Best SF #32.
