The Boy Who Hooked the Sun • 1985 • Fantasy short story by Gene Wolfe

A boy from Atlantis catches the sun on his fishing line. Several people ask him to release the sun but he rejects. It explains the cause of the seasons.

A legend from the imaginary Brown book, read by Severian, the narrator of The Book of the New Sun series. Like The God and His Man, this story is similar in style to Lord Dunsany. It works nicely as an excursion from the series, and it is quite different from his other stories – with a more vague, dreamlike feeling.

Meta: isfdb. This fantasy short story by Gene Wolfe was published December 1985. I read it as part of the collection The Best of Gene Wolfe.
