Meta: This near future SF shortstory appeared first 2012 in Mozilla Foundation Internet Preservation Society’s conference materials. Additionally, it will appear in his anthology Hannu Rajaniemi: Collected Fiction.
Synopsis: A guy helps building a cathedral in a Minecraft similar game. Virtuality touches reality and he is in for a surprise when he meets his partner.
Review: The story blurs the line between virtual gaming and reality: An A.I. algorithm which is present in augmented reality assesses every action to estimate e.g. whether you’ll have sex tonight – this feels like a RPG where a dungeon master gives you experience points. The assessment is visible for other people as well and form a basis for new cultural interaction patterns – people are modelled. But they also model the world – in virtual reality by creative acts like the cathedral building. I liked that philosophical questions more than the plot or characters.
