Invisible Men • shortstory by Christopher Barzak

Meta: ISFDB. First published in Eclipse, Dec 2012, freely available at the author’s website. I’ve read it in The Year’s Best Science Fiction: Thirtieth Annual Collection.

Millie, the Coach and Horses’ servant girl in Well’s Invisible Man tells this pastiche of that SF Masterwork. There is the physically invisible man but the story explores other types of invisibility in terms of social class, or gender.

I had my problems working into the story with Millie’s special literary voice, and the dry unengaging narration. But Millie’s multifaceted character and the storie’s essence are good.
